چکیده

Mesophotic coral ecosystems (MCEs) are ecologically and functionally vital, as they Essential Fish Habitats that function refugia for corals sponges of shallow-water reefs. Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease (SCTLD) is a relatively new lethal disease, first affecting reefs in Florida has now spread through most the Caribbean. SCTLD was observed Puerto Rico December 2019 Culebra Island. Since then, appeared along east coast Rico, primarily shallow San Juan, Vieques Island, Fajardo. During late June July 2020, four mesophotic reef habitats were surveyed at El Seco (off Island), on southeast Rico. colonized pavement (CPRT – 23–30 m), bank (BCR 35–40 patch (PCR 36–42 rhodolith (Rhodo 40–50 m) habitats. The mean percent substrate cover by sessile-benthic categories varied significantly between (PERMANOVA, p < 0.001), with higher (± SE) BCR (26.95 ± 5.60%), followed PCR (12.88 3.88%). detected all habitats, but disease prevalence BCR, ranging from 9.70 to 21.13% colonies infected (Kruskal-Wallis ANOVA, 0.007). Even though exhibited less cover, still elevated 6.66 15.07%. deepest record 40.9 m. majority (∼98%) Orbicella complex spp. ( faveolata / franksi ). The State of Coral Reef Ecosystems of Puerto Rico

INTRODUCTION AND SETTING The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico is comprised of a number of islands in the northern Caribbean, including the island of Puerto Rico and offshore islands such as Culebra, Vieques, Monito, and Desecheo (Figure 3.1). The following information adds to the comprehensive overview of Puertorrican reefs provided in the previous edition of this report (García-Sais et al., 2005). ...

Sea Surface Temperatures and Coral Reef Bleaching off La Parguera, Puerto Rico

Much recent attention has been given to coral reef bleaching because of its widespread occurrence, damage to reefs, and possible connection to global change. There is still debate about the relation-ship between temperature and widespread bleaching. We compared coral reef bleaching at La Parguera, Puerto Rico to a 30-y (1966–1995) record of sea surface temperature (SST) at the same location. Th...

A new species of Litarachna (Acari, Hydrachnidia, Pontarachnidae) from a Caribbean mesophotic coral ecosystem

NEW RECORDS OF PONTARACHNID MITES (ACARI Hydrachnidia) from the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico are presented. Litarachna lopezae sp. n., from substrata collected from Bajo de Sico, a mesophotic coral reef ecosystem in Mona Passage off Puerto Rico, is described as new to science. The new species was collected from nearly 70 m depth, the greatest depth from which pontarachnid mites have been fou...

A new species of Boca Lowry & Stoddart, 1997 (Amphipoda: Lysianassoidea: Aristiidae) from a mesophotic coral ecosystem off Puerto Rico, Caribbean Sea.

A new species of the genus Boca Lowry & Stoddart, 1997 is described from a mesophotic coral ecosystem off southwestern Puerto Rico, in the Caribbean Sea. The new species is easily recognized from the others in the genus mainly by the following characters: (1) maxilliped, inner plate with 2 long apical simple setae; palp, articles slender, subequal in length; (2) gnathopod 1, propodus slightly e...
